Turf vs Seed — Which Is Right for You?
The choice between turf and seed is one of the first decisions to make when creating a new lawn. Both have significant advantages, and the right choice depends on your budget, timeframe, the size of the area and how quickly you need the lawn to be usable. Turf provides an instant lawn that is visually complete on the day of laying and ready for light use within two to three weeks. It is the preferred choice for most of our clients across Slough, Windsor, Maidenhead and Greater London because of the immediate transformation it provides. Turf also suppresses weeds effectively from day one, as the dense, mature sward leaves no bare soil for weed seeds to colonise. The main drawback is cost — turf is typically three to four times more expensive per square metre than seed.
Seeding is considerably cheaper and gives you access to a wider range of grass cultivars, allowing you to select a mixture perfectly tailored to your conditions — be it heavy shade, dry soil, or intensive family use. However, a seeded lawn takes eight to twelve weeks to establish to a usable level and requires more careful aftercare during this period, including regular watering, protection from birds and no foot traffic. Seeding is best suited to larger areas where the cost saving is significant, or when you want a specific grass mixture that is not available in turf form.

Soil Preparation — Getting It Right
Whether you choose turf or seed, soil preparation is the most critical stage of creating a new lawn, and it is where our team's experience truly shows. Cutting corners on preparation is the single most common reason new lawns fail, and we see the evidence regularly when asked to renovate lawns across Berkshire that were poorly installed by other contractors or optimistic DIY attempts.
Our preparation process begins with removing the existing surface — whether that is old turf, weeds, rubble or builder's debris. We then assess the underlying soil. In many new-build properties across Slough and Greater London, the subsoil is heavily compacted clay with minimal topsoil — sometimes the builders have simply laid turf on compacted subsoil, which is why so many new-build lawns fail within the first year or two. We break up compaction to a depth of at least 150mm using a rotavator or cultivator.
Next, we import quality screened topsoil to achieve a minimum depth of 100-150mm across the entire area. This topsoil is spread evenly, raked to a fine, level tilth, and consolidated by treading and light rolling to eliminate air pockets while avoiding over-compaction. The final surface should be firm enough that your feet leave only slight impressions when you walk on it. We also incorporate a pre-turf or pre-seed fertiliser to provide essential nutrients during establishment.

Best Times to Lay Turf or Sow Seed
Timing your new lawn installation correctly significantly affects how quickly and successfully it establishes. In Berkshire and the wider South East, the climate offers generous windows for both turfing and seeding, but some periods are clearly better than others.
Turf can be laid at almost any time of year, provided the ground is not frozen or waterlogged. However, the best periods are autumn (September to November) and spring (March to May). Autumn-laid turf benefits from warm soil and increasing rainfall, allowing roots to establish strongly before winter. Spring-laid turf grows rapidly as temperatures rise, but requires more frequent watering during dry spells. Summer turfing is possible but demands intensive irrigation during the establishment period — this can be challenging for large areas without a sprinkler system.
Seed is more sensitive to timing. The optimal window for sowing lawn seed in Berkshire is mid-August to mid-October, when soil temperatures are still warm from summer, rainfall is increasing, and weed competition is declining. Spring sowing (late March to May) is the second-best option. We strongly advise against sowing seed in midsummer when drought stress and high temperatures can kill seedlings, or in late autumn and winter when soil temperatures are too low for germination.

Aftercare in the First Six Weeks
The first six weeks after installation are critical for both turf and seed. Proper aftercare during this period determines whether your new lawn establishes into a thick, healthy sward or struggles with poor rooting, patchy growth and weed invasion. We provide every client with detailed written aftercare instructions and offer optional follow-up visits to check progress and advise on any issues.
For newly laid turf, watering is the top priority. The turf must not be allowed to dry out during the first two to three weeks while roots grow into the soil beneath. In dry weather, water thoroughly in the early morning or evening — enough to soak through the turf and into the top 50mm of soil below. You can check rooting progress after two weeks by gently lifting a corner of a turf section: if you feel resistance, roots are establishing well. The first mow should be carried out once the grass reaches approximately 50mm, using a sharp mower set to cut at 30-35mm. Avoid heavy use for four to six weeks.
Seeded lawns require even more patience. Keep the seedbed moist — not saturated — at all times during germination, which takes seven to twenty-one days depending on species and temperature. A fine sprinkler on a timer is ideal for large areas. Do not walk on the seedbed during germination and early growth. The first cut should wait until seedlings reach 50-60mm tall, using a rotary mower set to 35-40mm. Subsequent cuts gradually reduce the height over several weeks. Apply no fertiliser until after the second mow, and avoid weedkiller until the lawn has been mown at least three times.
