Choosing the right paving material

Porcelain paving has seen an enormous surge in popularity over the past five years. Manufactured to extremely tight tolerances, porcelain tiles offer near-zero water absorption, which means they resist frost damage, algae growth, and staining far better than natural stone. Brands like PorcelPave, Stonemarket Namera, and Marshalls Symphony provide stunning finishes that mimic natural timber, travertine, or slate without the upkeep.

Block paving — whether clay or concrete — remains the go-to choice for areas that need an interlocking, flexible surface. Herringbone-laid blocks can withstand vehicular loading, making them the preferred option for combined patio and driveway areas. Limestone and granite setts offer a premium alternative with a more formal aesthetic, popular for front-of-house patios in conservation areas across Windsor and Maidenhead.

Sub-base preparation and laying methods

The longevity of any patio depends entirely on what lies beneath it. We begin every project by excavating to the required depth — typically 200mm to 250mm for a pedestrian patio and 300mm or more where vehicle access is anticipated. The excavated area is then inspected for soft spots, tree roots, and service routes before we lay a geotextile membrane to prevent sub-base migration into the subsoil.

Our standard sub-base is 100mm to 150mm of Ministry of Transport (MOT) Type 1 crushed stone, laid in lifts and compacted with a vibrating plate compactor to achieve a firm, stable platform. On heavy clay soils — common across much of Slough and the Thames Valley — we may increase the sub-base depth or introduce additional drainage layers to guard against frost heave and waterlogging.

Natural stone and porcelain slabs are typically laid on a full mortar bed — a semi-dry mix of sharp sand and cement at a 4:1 ratio — with each slab individually tapped to level using a rubber mallet. We use a string line and spirit level throughout to maintain a consistent fall gradient of at least 1:60 away from the house. Block paving, by contrast, is laid on a compacted sharp sand screed and vibrated into place as an interlocking, flexible surface.

Jointing is the final step and one that many contractors rush. We offer both traditional sand-and-cement pointing and modern brush-in jointing compounds such as GeoFix or UltraScape Pro. For porcelain paving, we use a specialist adhesive primer and flexible grout to prevent the common problem of slab delamination that plagues poorly installed porcelain patios.

Drainage requirements and regulations

Since the amendment to Building Regulations Part H in 2008, any paving that replaces a previously permeable surface (such as a lawn) and exceeds five square metres must either use permeable materials or manage surface water runoff on-site. This is a legal requirement, and failure to comply can lead to enforcement action and complications when you sell your property.

We design every patio project with drainage at the forefront. Options include permeable jointing materials that allow water to filter through the gaps between slabs, linear channel drains (ACO drains) positioned at the patio perimeter, and dedicated soakaways connected via underground pipework. On larger projects in areas of Buckinghamshire and Surrey with restrictive soil drainage, we may recommend a combined approach.

For properties prone to surface water flooding — increasingly common across the Thames Valley — we can incorporate SuDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems) features such as rain gardens, gravel filter strips, or permeable paving zones that slow water release and reduce the burden on the local storm drain network. Pattern options and design inspiration

The laying pattern has a dramatic effect on the finished look. A random coursed layout using three or four slab sizes creates a natural, informal feel that suits cottage and traditional gardens. A linear stack-bond pattern with uniform-sized porcelain tiles delivers a crisp, contemporary aesthetic popular in modern new-build gardens across Greater London. Herringbone block paving adds visual interest and structural integrity to both patios and driveways.

Maintaining your patio for years to come

Once your patio is installed, a small amount of regular maintenance will keep it looking pristine for decades. Natural stone patios benefit from an annual clean with a pressure washer set to a moderate fan spray — never use a narrow pencil jet on sandstone, as it erodes the surface. A specialist stone sealer applied every three to five years enhances the colour and provides an invisible barrier against oil, wine, and algae stains.

Porcelain paving requires even less attention. Its near-zero porosity means algae struggles to take hold, and most marks can be removed with warm soapy water and a stiff brush. For stubborn stains, a diluted solution of sodium hypochlorite (household bleach) is safe on porcelain — unlike natural stone, where acidic or bleach-based cleaners can cause permanent discolouration.

Block paving joints should be checked annually and topped up with kiln-dried sand or polymeric jointing compound where needed. Weeds that establish in joints are a sign that the jointing has degraded and needs replenishing. We recommend removing any weeds by hand or with a targeted weed killer before re-sanding, then compacting with a plate vibrator to lock the new material in place.

Drainage channels and gully pots should be cleared of leaves and debris at least twice a year — ideally in late autumn after leaf fall and again in spring. Blocked drainage is the most common cause of water pooling on patios and can lead to frost damage in winter. A few minutes of clearing each season prevents costly repairs down the line and keeps your patio looking its best throughout the year.
